SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers overcame a messy first half to beat the Carolina Panthers 20-9 on Monday night, a win that improves their standing in the NFC playoff picture.
San Francisco moved to 8-4 (7-2 in the NFC) while Carolina dropped to 6-6 (4-3). ESPN’s Football Power Index raised the 49ers’ playoff chance from 86% to 91.3% and lowered the Panthers’ odds from 22.7% to 18%.
Christian McCaffrey, making his first start against the team that traded him in 2022, was the focal point of the Niners’ attack. He finished with 142 scrimmage yards on 31 touches and scored on a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. It marked his 10th 100-yard scrimmage game this season and his eighth game this year with at least 50 rushing and 50 receiving yards — his 14th 50/50 outing since joining San Francisco, tying Frank Gore for second in franchise history.
Quarterback Brock Purdy struggled early, throwing three interceptions in the first half. After halftime adjustments — including a heavier dose of quick passes and screens called by Kyle Shanahan — Purdy settled in and completed 23 of 32 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. The second-half game plan helped limit mistakes and sustain drives when the offense needed them.
The 49ers’ defense, playing without stars Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, delivered a surprisingly strong performance. Ji’Ayir Brown recorded two interceptions, one of them in the end zone, and finished with five tackles. Carolina was held to just 230 total yards and averaged 5.3 yards per play; the Panthers managed only 72 yards and three first downs in the first half — both season lows. San Francisco also limited Carolina to only three points off turnovers and made timely plays to compensate for offensive miscues.
For the Panthers, Bryce Young could not duplicate last week’s big passing day. He posted a passer rating near 25.0 in the first half and threw an interception with 6:27 remaining in the game that essentially ended Carolina’s comeback hopes. Carolina’s ground game was bottled up for a third straight contest, increasing the burden on Young and the passing attack.
Carolina also lost Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn to a concussion late in the first half, a blow to their secondary as they prepare to face the Los Angeles Rams next week. The Panthers sit a half-game behind Tampa Bay in the NFC South.
Notable takeaways: McCaffrey’s all-purpose workmanlike performance; a rough opening for Purdy followed by cleaner play in the second half; a stout 49ers defense despite key absences; and mounting concerns for the Panthers’ rushing attack and secondary health.
Next up: San Francisco at Cleveland Browns (Sunday, 1 p.m. ET). Carolina at Los Angeles Rams (Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET).
