North Carolina coach Bill Belichick said Friday he will not pursue any NFL head-coaching openings after his name surfaced in connection with the New York Giants vacancy.
Following the Giants’ decision to fire Brian Daboll on Monday, speculation linked Belichick to the job. In an Instagram post, Belichick wrote, “Despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies.”
Belichick, in his first season leading the Tar Heels, reminded reporters he is focused on North Carolina and its upcoming game against Wake Forest. The program is 4-5 after winning two straight games. He told reporters during a Tuesday news conference that his attention is on preparing the team for Saturday.
A longtime NFL coach before moving to college, Belichick won six Super Bowls as the New England Patriots’ head coach and served as defensive coordinator on Bill Parcells’ Giants staffs that captured titles in 1986 and 1990. In his statement he expressed appreciation for the Giants organization and the Mara and Tisch families, calling his time with them and on Parcells’ staff a privilege.
Belichick also reiterated his commitment to UNC, saying support from the university, alumni and Carolina community has been strong and that his focus remains on improving the team, developing players and building a program that makes Tar Heel fans proud.
