Pound-for-pound supremacy was on the line at UFC 322 as welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena defended his belt against former lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev in the main event at Madison Square Garden in New York. Della Maddalena went into the night seeking his first title defense, while Makhachev — who moved up for the opportunity — competed in his sixth straight championship fight. The two entered the bout ranked No. 8 and No. 2, respectively, in ESPN’s men’s P4P rankings.
In the co-main, former strawweight champion Zhang Weili moved up to the women’s flyweight division to challenge Valentina Shevchenko for the title. Zhang was ranked No. 1 in the women’s P4P list, with Shevchenko at No. 2.
On the undercard, fan-favorites Malcolm Wellmaker and Tracy Cortez went down, suffering defeats that underscored the night’s high stakes and surprises.
