North Carolina coach Bill Belichick said Friday he will not pursue any NFL head-coaching openings after his name was linked to the New York Giants vacancy. The speculation followed the Giants’ decision to fire Brian Daboll on Monday. In an Instagram post, Belichick said he has not and will not pursue NFL head-coaching vacancies.
In his first season leading the Tar Heels, Belichick told reporters his attention is on North Carolina and its upcoming game against Wake Forest. The program is 4-5 after winning two straight games, and at a Tuesday news conference he emphasized that preparing the team for Saturday remains his priority.
A longtime NFL coach before moving to college, Belichick won six Super Bowls as the New England Patriots’ head coach and served as defensive coordinator on Bill Parcells’ Giants staffs that captured titles in 1986 and 1990. He expressed appreciation for the Giants organization and the Mara and Tisch families, calling his time there and on Parcells’ staff a privilege.
Belichick reiterated his commitment to UNC, saying the support from the university, alumni and the Carolina community has been strong and that his focus is on improving the team, developing players and building a program that makes Tar Heel fans proud.
