The club’s decision to relieve Ed Still of his duties after just three months was hardly a surprise. Whatever the Coventry result added — another uninspiring display — his departure had felt inevitable for some time. Recent weeks produced poor results, flat performances and no obvious tactical identity or coherent game plan.
Players have appeared demoralized; morale, confidence and team spirit are at a very low ebb, and that made Still’s position unsustainable. Owner Gino Pozzo has shown little patience when standards slip, and he faced jeers from home supporters after the latest defeat.
Like several former Watford managers, Still can point to a chaotic, misaligned club culture that makes steady progress difficult and hinders any coach’s prospects. That argument has merit, but I still believe he was out of his depth as both a motivator and a tactician, lacking the leadership presence needed to steady a fractious dressing room.
