What had been billed as a meeting of two teenage sensations turned into Estevao Willian’s night. With Chelsea already in control and Barcelona reduced to 10 men, the 18-year-old produced a moment that lit up Stamford Bridge.
After a pass from Reece James, Estevao cut inside, wrong-footed Alejandro Balde and fired a low, driven shot into the roof of the net past Joan Garcia. The strike completed a 3-0 victory and underlined why the buzz around him is growing.
“Start believing the hype,” former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin declared on BBC Radio 5 Live, praising the finish and Estevao’s footwork, movement and football intelligence as “beautiful to see.” Ex-Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge told Amazon Prime that expectation had been on Lamine Yamal, but Estevao’s display was “absolutely brilliant.”
Yamal was withdrawn in the 80th minute to jeers as Chelsea’s dominance was already established; Estevao left the field two minutes and 40 seconds later to a standing ovation.
Tuesday’s Champions League tie was the first official meeting between the two 18-year-olds, born three months apart in 2007. Valuations from the CIES Football Observatory put Yamal at about £307.4m and Estevao at roughly £103.8m. Comparisons are inevitable, but Yamal still leads on many attacking metrics and international honours—he finished second in the Ballon d’Or, starred for Spain at Euro 2024 at 17, and has twice won the Kopa Trophy.
Yamal’s club record stands at 31 goals and 42 assists in 119 Barcelona appearances, plus six goals in 23 Spain caps, including becoming his country’s youngest scorer. Estevao’s senior figures are smaller but noteworthy: five goals and one assist in 11 Chelsea appearances, 27 goals and 15 assists in 83 Palmeiras games before his move, and five goals in 11 Brazil caps.
After the match Estevao, visibly emotional, called it “the perfect night” and “definitely the best moment of my career so far,” saying the move and finish happened quickly and felt special.
Chelsea paid an initial £29m for Estevao in the summer, with the fee potentially rising to £51m. Manager Enzo Maresca warned against inflated comparisons to figures like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, saying such parallels place undue pressure on young players: “They need to enjoy their football.” He added that selection is determined by the gameplan and that minutes must be earned.
So why did Yamal have a difficult evening? Tasked with taking on Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, Yamal found it harder to exert the influence he enjoys at Barcelona. Nevin noted that Yamal started the game looking graceful and threatening, but Cucurella increasingly had him “in his pocket.” Cucurella’s combative defending produced the most successful tackles on the pitch and won praise from Wayne Rooney, who likened the impact to Ashley Cole’s display against Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2004.
The fixture underlined two different nights for two promising talents: Estevao’s moment of composed finishing and poise on one hand, and Yamal’s tougher evening under intense defensive pressure on the other. For Chelsea, it confirmed that Estevao can produce moments of genuine quality on Europe’s biggest stage; for Barcelona and Yamal, it offered a reminder of how much influence elite full-backs can exert.
