Sherrone Moore was being held Wednesday night at the Washtenaw County Jail as a suspect in an alleged assault, hours after the University of Michigan terminated him as head football coach for an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Pittsfield Township police said officers responded at 4:10 p.m. to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road to investigate an alleged assault. A suspect was taken into custody; authorities said the incident does not appear random and there is no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending a review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. Police said the investigation is ongoing and, because of the nature of the allegations and the need to protect the integrity of the inquiry, they cannot release further details at this time.
Saline police said they assisted in locating and detaining Moore and then turned him over to Pittsfield Township officers for the investigation of potential charges.
Earlier Wednesday, the university announced Moore’s immediate dismissal after an internal investigation. Michigan said credible evidence was found that Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member and that he was terminated with cause.
Moore, 39, had been Michigan’s head football coach for two seasons after serving as the team’s offensive coordinator.
