Kieran Trippier will leave Newcastle United when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The 35-year-old joined the club from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, becoming the first signing under Newcastle’s Saudi-led takeover. Arriving while the team sat in the relegation zone, Trippier quickly became a major influence as Eddie Howe rebuilt the squad and culture.
Trippier played a key part in Newcastle’s recent highs: he helped the club end a seven-decade wait for a major domestic trophy by winning the EFL Cup last season and was instrumental in the team’s returns to the Champions League in 2023 and 2025.
In a joint statement, Trippier described his decision to leave as emotional and said Newcastle had been the place where he had “felt most at home.” He thanked supporters for their backing through good and bad times, paid tribute to team-mates and called lifting the EFL Cup “the best of my career.”
He also expressed gratitude to Eddie Howe, who first brought him to the club after their earlier work together at Burnley. Howe, in turn, praised Trippier’s contribution and professionalism, highlighting the defender’s technical quality, crossing, leadership and the standards he helped establish at St James’ Park.
Signed for a reported £12m, Trippier’s transfer has proven one of Newcastle’s most influential. When he arrived the team had won just once that season, sat 19th in the table and suffered an FA Cup shock defeat to Cambridge United on his debut. His belief and presence helped change the club’s trajectory and aided recruitment, with players such as captain Bruno Guimaraes following.
Trippier said his aim on moving to Tyneside was to help take the club where it needed to be. While this season has posed domestic challenges, his tenure largely achieved that objective, laying foundations for future progress.
His exit signals the end of an era as Newcastle look to reduce the squad’s average age and enter a new phase. Supporters are expected to give him a warm farewell; many will remember Trippier as one of the club’s best-ever right-backs.
