Bristol City have appointed former England manager Roy Hodgson as interim head coach. The club say the move is not just about the immediate run of fixtures — Hodgson will oversee standards and values for the remainder of the season and help prepare the squad and staff for the future.
Gerhard Struber had been appointed at Ashton Gate in June after Liam Manning left to become Norwich City’s manager. The 49-year-old Austrian, whose contract ran to the summer of 2028, had previously spent a year in charge of Barnsley (2019–20) and also managed New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg and Cologne. During his time at the club he publicly raised concerns about the perceived lack of depth in the academy and expressed frustration at the January departures of Sam Vyner and Firat Mehmeti.
City chief executive Charlie Boss thanked Gerhard and Bernd for their work over the past nine months and wished them well. He said Hodgson’s appointment is intended to set the standards and values needed for success going forward, and that the experienced coach will support the board, players and football staff as the club builds towards its potential. Boss added the club is in the process of appointing a sporting director who will have direct input into recruiting the new permanent head coach.
