The Indianapolis Colts’ newest cornerback, Sauce Gardner, responded to a viral video this week by signing and sending two Colts jerseys to the young fans featured in the clip.
The video showed a father telling his two young sons that one of their favorite players had been traded from the New York Jets to the Colts. When the younger boy realized it was Gardner, he burst into tears because he’d been given a Jets jersey. After a few loud shrieks he declared, “I don’t like the Jets!” before announcing, “I like the Colts now!”
Gardner saw the video and the Colts shared a short clip Wednesday evening of their new star signing two jerseys. “I appreciate y’all for the support,” Gardner says in the clip. “With that being said, I’m going to be giving you guys two of my first Colts jerseys.” The team plans to send those signed jerseys to the boys.
Gardner’s move comes after a surprising trade earlier in the week: the Colts acquired the two-time All-Pro cornerback from the Jets in exchange for two first-round picks and receiver Adonai Mitchell. Gardner cleared concussion protocol on Thursday and is expected to fly with the Colts to Berlin for Sunday’s International Series game against the Atlanta Falcons.
The gesture won’t erase the shock of the trade for upset young fans, but it appears likely the two boys will now be watching — and cheering for — Gardner in his new Colts uniform.
