BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A UAB football player stabbed two teammates Saturday morning, hours before the Blazers’ game against USF, the university said in a statement.
Interim coach Alex Mortensen said at the postgame news conference that the two injured players were in stable condition. He added the team chose to play to honor graduating seniors in the final home game of the season, though several players sat out because of the incident.
The teammate suspected in the stabbings was in custody, the university said, but officials did not release the names involved.
Jefferson County Jail records show offensive lineman Daniel Mincey, who transferred to UAB in May, was arrested and booked in the afternoon on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder. Mincey was listed in custody in Birmingham and appeared to be the only UAB player arrested Saturday.
It was not immediately clear whether Mincey had legal representation, and attempts to reach family members were unsuccessful. UAB officials declined to confirm Mincey’s involvement.
UAB’s online roster lists Mincey as a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida, who previously attended the University of Kentucky.
Mortensen said once the decision to play was made the team stuck to its regular game-day routines and that counseling was being offered to players who wanted it. He declined to provide further details, citing an ongoing investigation.
The stabbing occurred on campus at the Football Operations Building.
The Blazers lost 48-18 to USF, dropping to 3-8 on the season and 1-6 in the American Athletic Conference. UAB’s final game is Nov. 29 at Tulsa.
