INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts made unwanted history Monday night when he committed two turnovers on the same play in the first half against the Chargers.
Midway through the second quarter, Hurts threw a pass over the middle that was intercepted by Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand. Hand fumbled while returning the pick, and Hurts recovered the loose ball — only to fumble himself on the hit. The Chargers recovered the second fumble.
The Elias Sports Bureau says Hurts is the first player to commit two turnovers on the same play in its research, which goes back to 1978. He was intercepted again on the next series, marking the first time in his career he threw interceptions on consecutive drives.
There were six combined turnovers in the second quarter, the most in a quarter since Oct. 27, 2013, when Denver and Washington combined for seven in the fourth. Hurts was intercepted once more in the fourth quarter when the ball came off receiver A.J. Brown; Hurts has six turnovers over the past two games.
