Ben Whitehouse, a prominent referee in rugby, is set to exchange his whistle for a coaching role with the Welsh national team. After officiating the match between the Ospreys and Dragons this Saturday in the United Rugby Championship, Whitehouse will take on a full-time position as a specialist coach.
A New Chapter in Coaching
At the age of 36, Whitehouse will be collaborating closely with head coach Steve Tandy, as well as other coaching staff, focusing on the principles of law, discipline, decision-making, and effective communication.
“Ben's contributions have already been significant in our work together this year, so it's exciting to formalize his role,” Tandy explained. “His extensive refereeing background provides valuable insights, particularly regarding communication and the game’s laws. We aim to enhance our skill set as we enter the next phase of the Nations Championship in November.”
From the Whistle to the Coaching Box
The son of renowned former international referee Nigel Whitehouse, Ben has officiated nine Test matches since making his debut in 2015. With most of his recent activity in the TMO (Television Match Official) position, Whitehouse participated in both the RWC 2021 and RWC 2023 tournaments.
In addition to his international experience, Whitehouse has successfully officiated over 100 matches in the United Rugby Championship, becoming only the third individual to reach this impressive milestone in the league's history.
A Passion for Rugby
Reflecting on his transition, Whitehouse shared, “I've enjoyed my time with Steve, the coaches, and the players immensely. Rugby has played a significant role in my life from a young age, and representing Wales means everything to me.”
Dave Reddin, WRU Director of Rugby and Elite Performance, expressed enthusiasm for this new role, stating, “This position is part of our strategy to establish a clear and cohesive Welsh rugby identity. The tactical and strategic expertise that Ben brings will be invaluable as we aim to expedite our growth in all facets of the game.”
Looking Ahead
As the Wales rugby team gears up for the upcoming Nations Championship, the addition of Whitehouse on the coaching staff is expected to bolster their performance and align their approach on and off the field.
