Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo exited Wednesday night’s 113-109 victory over the Detroit Pistons after suffering a noncontact right calf strain early in the game at Fiserv Forum.
The injury occurred roughly three minutes into the first quarter, after Antetokounmpo hit a jump pass to guard AJ Green. While hustling back on defense he collapsed to the floor, immediately favoring his right leg. He checked the limb, appeared in visible pain, rested with his elbows on his knees and was helped off the court by teammates before heading to the locker room.
The Bucks announced Antetokounmpo would not return, and head coach Doc Rivers said the team sent him for an MRI. Statistically, he finished the brief stint with two points, one rebound and an assist.
Antetokounmpo had missed four games last month with a left groin strain but had participated in the Bucks’ three games leading up to Wednesday.
The injury comes amid reports that Antetokounmpo is evaluating his long-term future with Milwaukee. Sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania that Antetokounmpo and his agent, Alex Saratsis, have been discussing whether his best fit remains in Milwaukee. Rivers, speaking prior to Wednesday’s game, said there had been no team conversations on that front and added that Antetokounmpo “loves Milwaukee and he loves the Bucks.”
