INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts made rare history Monday night when one play produced two turnovers in the first half against the Chargers. Midway through the second quarter, Hurts threw over the middle and Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand intercepted the pass. Hand then fumbled while trying to return the pick; Hurts recovered the loose ball but was immediately stripped on the hit, and the Chargers recovered the second fumble.
The Elias Sports Bureau notes that, in its research dating back to 1978, Hurts is the first player recorded to commit two turnovers on the same play. On the very next series he was intercepted again, the first time in his career he’s thrown picks on consecutive drives.
There were six combined turnovers in the second quarter — the most in a quarter since Oct. 27, 2013, when Denver and Washington combined for seven in the fourth. Hurts was intercepted once more in the fourth quarter when the pass came off receiver A.J. Brown; he has totaled six turnovers over the past two games.
