Match Officials Confirmed for Nations Cup in November

World Rugby announces referees for the Nations Cup set to take place in November, featuring key matchups across Europe and Hong Kong.

Referees Set for Nations Cup Matches

World Rugby has officially appointed match officials for the upcoming November phase of the first-ever Nations Cup, featuring 18 referees hailing from 11 different unions. These officials will oversee a series of 18 matches across Europe and Hong Kong scheduled between November 6 and 21.

Exciting Matchups Await

The Nations Cup will resume on November 6, building on the thrilling action from the July matches. Currently, Georgia and the USA remain undefeated, leading their respective pools in this competitive tournament.

This event is designed to highlight 12 nations that have qualified for the Rugby World Cup 2027, representing emerging and developing rugby markets. Together with the Nations Championship, the Nations Cup is a key component of World Rugby's new global competition framework. This initiative aims to create more significant international fixtures and establish a clear path toward a 24-team Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Key Referee Appointments

Angus Gardner from Australia will kick off the matches by officiating the opening game between Romania and Tonga in Bucharest on November 6.

A significant milestone is set for New Zealand's Ben O'Keeffe, who will referee his 60th Test match during Spain's encounter with Uruguay on November 7.

The tournament will wrap up on November 21 with a match between Zimbabwe and Chile, overseen by Wales' Ben Breakspear at Stade Chanzy in Angoulême, France. Breakspear is among five referees returning from the July window action.

Experience and Development Focus

World Rugby emphasizes that referee appointments were made with the dual goals of nurturing officiating talent and preparing for the Rugby World Cup. By giving referees experience with teams likely to compete in 2027, the governing body aims to enhance skills while ensuring that the participating nations benefit from seasoned referees from the international panel.

Additional October and November Fixtures

Aside from the Nations Cup, World Rugby has also revealed referee appointments for various representative fixtures taking place in October and November.

  • Nika Amashukeli from Georgia will officiate Japan versus Fiji in Tokyo on October 24, marking a rematch of the recent Pacific Nations Cup final.
  • Amashukeli will also referee England A against the Argentina XV in Bath on November 6.
  • Katsuki Furuse from Japan and Argentina's Damián Schneider are set to oversee the two USA versus Australia A matches.
  • George Selwood from England has been appointed to referee Ireland XV versus Fiji A in Cork on November 20.

The appointments for the Nations Championship Northern Hemisphere Series will be announced separately.
