MLS Adopts European Schedule Starting July 2027

Major League Soccer will switch to a European-style calendar in 2027, aiming for global alignment.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is set to make a groundbreaking transition by moving to a European-style football calendar beginning in July 2027. This significant shift, which involves starting the season mid-year and concluding it in May, marks the first time in the league's history that the season will span two calendar years.

New Season Structure

The forthcoming 2027-28 MLS season will kick off in July 2027 and wrap up in May 2028, as confirmed by the league's official announcements. This change is designed to align MLS more closely with international football standards and the schedules of leading European leagues.

Impact on Players and Transfers

With this new calendar, players and coaching staff can look forward to a summer break during June after the season concludes—a departure from the current structure. In addition, the realigned schedule will implement distinct summer and winter transfer windows, mirroring those of Europe’s top clubs.

This adjustment is particularly beneficial for prominent international players such as Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, and Robert Lewandowski, who are accustomed to the European competitive landscape.

Transitional Competition Planned

To ensure a smooth transition and mitigate the long break between the 2026 season and the new format, MLS will host a transitional competition from February to May 2027. This tournament is slated to begin on February 19, 2027, and conclude on May 8, 2027, featuring all 30 teams from the league.

Teams will be separated into two groups, with each participating in 14 matches—seven at home and seven away. The top eight teams from each group will then advance to the knockout rounds, which will take place throughout May, culminating in a final scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend on May 31, 2027.

Strategic Shift for MLS

This move signifies a pivotal change from the MLS’s traditional season format and reflects its ambitions to reinforce its ties with the global football culture. By adopting these changes, the league hopes to enhance its competitiveness both on the pitch and in the global market.

The decision may well redefine how MLS operates, paving the way for improved engagement with fans, players, and international competitions.
