NBA Implements New Betting Restrictions Amid Scandals

New measures by the NBA seek to curb certain betting types after recent player scandals.

The NBA is taking decisive action this season to address concerns in the gambling landscape. In light of recent scandals involving players, the league has introduced new restrictions on specific types of sports wagers.

Details of the New Betting Restrictions

In a memo circulated to its sportsbook partners on October 16, the NBA laid out clear guidelines aimed at reducing the risks associated with certain betting types. These limitations primarily target parlays that combine statistical under wagers for multiple player categories.

Key restrictions include:

  • Banning parlays that include under wagers on the same player's multiple statistics.
  • Prohibiting bets on the outcome of the opening tip-off.
  • Limiting bets regarding whether players will miss specific shots.
  • Restricting under wagers for players anticipated to play less than 12 minutes in a game.

Furthermore, sportsbooks cannot provide alternate under lines if they offer disproportionately high payouts. These new rules are effective for NBA's licensed gambling partners, such as DraftKings and FanDuel, which dominate the U.S. betting market.

Reasons Behind the New Measures

The NBA's decision to implement these measures comes after a series of federal investigations related to gambling and player conduct. Noteworthy among these incidents is the case of former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter, who reportedly exited games prematurely to benefit bettors.

During the 2023-24 season, it was revealed that a bettor placed an extensive $80,000 parlay bet on six of Porter’s statistical unders, with a staggering potential payout of approximately $1.1 million. In this instance, Porter played only three minutes.

Additionally, allegations have surfaced regarding Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, who is accused of engaging in similar tactics during a March 2023 matchup while playing for the Charlotte Hornets. Rozier played for about nine minutes before leaving the game. He has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

NBA's Commitment to Responsible Gambling

In response to these ongoing issues, the NBA is not only tightening betting regulations but is also making significant efforts to identify and prevent suspicious betting activities. Scott Kaufman-Ross, NBA's executive vice president, emphasized the importance of striking a balance between removing risky bets and preventing additional movement towards the illegal gambling market.

To bolster these efforts, the NBA has appointed former NFL player and ex-FBI agent Charles Tillman to conduct in-person training for teams regarding proper betting protocols. Additionally, the league is enhancing its AI-powered betting monitoring system to track irregular activities more efficiently.

Furthermore, a new text-message hotline has been established for players to report any threats or harassment they may encounter, and a dedicated service will help identify and eliminate abusive social media messages aimed at players.

Both DraftKings and FanDuel have expressed their support for the NBA's new gambling restrictions, illustrating a collaborative effort to ensure fairness and integrity in the sport.

As the league navigates this evolving landscape, it remains committed to safeguarding its players and fans while maintaining a robust betting environment.
