The Duke of Sussex has apologised to Canada after wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers cap while attending Game 4 of the 2025 World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays in Los Angeles.
In a CTV interview he said sorry, adding he had been “under duress” when he put on the bright blue cap. He explained he felt it was “the polite thing to do” after being invited to the game by the Dodgers’ owner.
Many in Canada — a Commonwealth realm whose head of state is King Charles — expressed displeasure that he did not appear to show support for the country’s only Major League Baseball team. Prince Harry said he would like to apologise to Canada “for wearing it” and noted that he had little choice in the moment.
During the interview he wore a Toronto Blue Jays hat and joked that, with thinning hair and stadium floodlights, “you’ll take any hat that’s available.” He has said he will wear a Blue Jays cap going forward and was later seen backing Toronto in subsequent games, including in a short clip shared by the Duchess of Sussex.
While visiting Toronto to meet some of Canada’s oldest veterans, the prince was presented with a Blue Jays hat at Sunnybrook Hospital’s veterans centre.
The couple, who moved to California after stepping back from full-time royal duties in 2020, drew criticism on both sides of the border. Some Canadians felt let down, while some Dodgers fans in the US were annoyed at the high-profile front-row seats the couple occupied during the marathon 18-inning game — where local figures such as Magic Johnson and former Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax were seated nearby.
Separately, Prince Harry recently published an essay about “what it means to be British,” in which he praised pub banter, sportsground ribbing and a spirit of self-deprecating humour as defining features of British culture.
