The stage is set for the World Rugby Nations Cup 2026, with the Emirates Match Official appointments officially confirmed for the upcoming matches in November. Eighteen referees from 11 different unions will manage 18 competitive fixtures, which will unfold across various venues in Europe and Hong Kong from November 6 to November 21.
Global Competition Begins
This inaugural tournament aims to enhance international rugby and features 12 nations from emerging rugby markets, all of which are gearing up for the Men's Rugby World Cup 2027.
The Nations Cup will see teams divided into two pools of six, having engaged in three thrilling rounds of competition in July. Currently, Georgia and the USA are leading their respective pools and are the only unbeaten teams. Both will strive to maintain their winning streaks to claim the title of the first-ever champions.
Welcoming Elite Match Officials
The appointed referees not only represent a diverse international presence but also include some of the most seasoned officials in the sport. This initiative not only aims to showcase their skills but also prepares them for officiating at the Men's Rugby World Cup.
The matches will be held in various locations including England, France, Georgia, Hong Kong, Portugal, Romania, and Spain. Notably, the first match will see Angus Gardner from Australia officiate the opening encounter between Romania and Tonga at Stadionul National Arcul de Triumf in Bucharest on November 6.
Closing Ceremonies and Other Matches
As the Nations Cup heads toward its conclusion, Welsh referee Ben Breakspear will preside over the final match amid the competition’s festivities, overseeing the clash between Zimbabwe and Chile at Stade Chanzy in Angoulême, France on November 21.
In addition to the Nations Cup, World Rugby has also filled referee appointments for five other representative games scheduled throughout October and November. This includes Georgian referee Nika Amashukeli, who will officiate the match between Japan and Fiji in Tokyo on October 24, a repeat of the recent tight contest at the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup that Japan narrowly won 20-15.
Further appointments include Katsuki Furuse from Japan and Damián Schneider from Argentina, who will oversee the matches between the USA and Australia A on October 24 and 30 respectively. Additionally, Amashukeli will referee the England A against Argentina XV encounter in Bath on November 6, while George Selwood from England will officiate the match between Ireland XV and Fiji A in Cork on November 20.
As the November window approaches, rugby enthusiasts can anticipate exciting competitions that not only serve as a precursor to the World Cup but also enrich the global rugby landscape.
