A Legacy of Influence

Jones was celebrated for his innovative approach to the game, particularly as a pioneer of the run and shoot offense. This offensive strategy is characterized by its spread formations, dynamic receiver motions, and the ability to make real-time adjustments. His early experiences with Mouse Davis, during his time with teams like the Houston Gamblers and the Detroit Lions, shaped his understanding of this groundbreaking scheme.

Coaching Career Highlights

Jones began his notable coaching journey with the Atlanta Falcons, serving as the offensive coordinator from 1991 to 1993 before taking the reins as head coach. His tenure included a trip to the NFC Wild Card Game in 1995. However, in 1999, he transitioned to the college football realm, becoming head coach at the University of Hawaii.

During his nine seasons in Hawaii, Jones built a successful program, winning four bowl games and finishing with an impressive 23-4 record in his final two years. His impact on the players was profound, guiding numerous talents who would go on to excel both in college and professional football.

Turning Around SMU

In 2008, Jones took on the challenge of revitalizing the Southern Methodist University (SMU) program, which was struggling at the time. His first season was tough, ending with a 1-11 record. Nevertheless, through persistence and a strategic overhaul, he led the Mustangs to three bowl victories over the next four years, despite facing obstacles in his last two seasons.
