Tiffany Teo Advances to Asian Games MMA Final Amidst Controversy

Singaporean fighter Tiffany Teo secured her spot in the Asian Games final after a dramatic semi-final that ended with a draw.

NAGOYA – An unexpected twist defined the semi-final match of Singapore’s Tiffany Teo at the Asian Games. A mere 1.05 kilograms determined her advancement to the finals in the mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

The dramatic encounter against India's Suchika Tariyal took place on September 21 at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center. After a fierce two-round battle that ended in a deadlock, the fighters entered an overtime round where Teo initially registered a victory.

Controversial Decision

Despite Teo's apparent win, tensions rose when Tariyal and her team challenged the judges' decision. The controversy prompted a review by a different set of referees, who ultimately overturned the initial call and ruled it a draw.

According to the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association's regulations, a weight tiebreaker was then utilized. Teo, who weighed in at 58.8 kilograms during her morning weigh-in, emerged victorious due to being lighter than her opponent, who tipped the scales at 59.85 kilograms.

Finals Await

Tiffany Teo is now set to compete against Uzbekistan's Khilola Sobirova, who defeated Cambodia’s Cheng Dalin in another semi-final bout. The final bout is scheduled for September 22.

Teo expressed her satisfaction with the outcome despite the initial turmoil. “I’m relieved that my efforts led to a win, as my goal has always been the gold medal.” She noted her mental preparation during the bout and emphasized her determination to leave everything on the mat.

Reactions and Next Steps

Following the conclusion of the match, while Teo celebrated her victory, Tariyal’s emotional response illuminated the weight of the decision. In statements to the media, Tariyal conveyed her disagreement with the result, believing that the fight should have favored her.

“The judges never considered our perspective. They based their final decision solely on weight,” Tariyal stated.

A spokesperson from the Mixed Martial Arts Association of Singapore (MMAAS) defended the decision, highlighting that it was made in line with the competition rules and the appeal procedure that followed. The spokesperson acknowledged the surprising nature of the outcome but affirmed respect for the established arbitration protocols.

Tiffany Teo's success thus far in the Asian Games is particularly notable as it marks a historical achievement for Singapore in this sport, which is debuting at the continental level. Tactically adapting to the daily weight checks and the competition schedule has paid off for Teo, who humorously mentioned that her recent weigh-ins have allowed her to maintain a healthy diet without drastic weight cuts.

Her earlier victory against Iran's Arezou Salimighalehtaki secured her a place in the medal standings, ensuring at least a bronze for Singapore in MMA. As she prepares for the ultimate showdown, Teo remains focused on the goal of gold, demonstrating confidence in her training and readiness for the forthcoming rematch.

“I concentrate on variables I can control, and I trust that if I execute my strategies effectively, it will lead me to victory,” Teo said, acknowledging that Sobirova would likely come with a prepared game plan based on their previous encounter.
