A University of Alabama at Birmingham football player was arrested after two teammates were stabbed on Saturday morning, university officials said. The incident took place on campus at the Football Operations Building hours before UAB’s game against USF.
Interim coach Alex Mortensen told reporters after the game that the two injured players were in stable condition. He said the team elected to play to honor graduating seniors in the final home contest of the season, though several players chose not to participate because of the incident. Mortensen added that the team followed its normal game-day routines and that counseling was being offered, but he declined to provide further details because the matter remains under investigation.
UAB said the suspected teammate was in custody but did not release names. Jefferson County Jail records identify offensive lineman Daniel Mincey, who transferred to UAB in May, as having been arrested and booked Saturday afternoon on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder. Records list Mincey as a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida, who previously attended the University of Kentucky. It was not immediately clear whether he had legal representation, and attempts to reach family members were unsuccessful. UAB officials declined to confirm Mincey’s involvement.
The Blazers lost the game to USF 48-18, dropping to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in American Athletic Conference play. UAB’s final game of the season is scheduled for Nov. 29 at Tulsa.
