Paris St-Germain have asked France’s Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) to postpone their Ligue 1 match at Lens, which falls between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool.
PSG are due to play Lens on Saturday 11 April — three days after hosting Liverpool in the first leg and three days before the second leg at Anfield. Liverpool, meanwhile, are scheduled to host Fulham in the Premier League on the same date.
Lens, chasing their first top-flight title since 1998 and currently second in the table one point behind PSG, have strongly opposed the request. The club released a statement condemning what it called a “troubling sentiment” and warning that the domestic league risks being “gradually relegated to the status of an adjustment variable at the whim of the European imperatives of some.” Lens added that the situation raises a fundamental question about the respect due to the competition.
A PSG spokesperson told BBC Sport that rescheduling of this nature has been carried out regularly by the LFP in the past to support French clubs competing in Europe and “in no way calls the league into question.” PSG also argued that strong performances in European competitions benefit French football overall, noting France’s sixth place in the UEFA coefficient rankings for the 2025–26 season.
Lens head coach Pierre Sage, speaking after his side’s 5-1 win over Angers, said his team did not agree with a postponement. PSG previously had a domestic weekend off between two Champions League legs after their Ligue 1 game against Nantes was postponed ahead of a tie with Chelsea; PSG went on to win that tie 8-2 on aggregate.
The final decision rests with the LFP, which says it will seek to assist French clubs playing in Europe. The LFP also confirmed that Strasbourg have asked for their league game at Brest on the same weekend to be postponed, as it falls between their Conference League fixtures against Mainz.
