Talks are ongoing over a potential two-year contract for interim boss Michael Carrick, with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox reported to have recommended his appointment to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. That backing is seen as a strong sign that making Carrick Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor could be only a matter of time.
Inside the squad most players are said to support Carrick taking the job, and a majority of supporters also appear to believe he has done enough to earn the role. Since replacing Amorim he has won 10 of his 15 Premier League matches, a run that has helped secure Manchester United a place in next season’s Champions League.
United require just one point from their final two league fixtures to guarantee third place in the table.
The 44-year-old is among a six-man shortlist for the Premier League’s Manager of the Season award, reflecting the impact he has had since stepping in.
Carrick confirmed that 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder Casemiro will be available for what is expected to be the player’s farewell at Old Trafford. He also said he plans to follow the tradition of his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson by addressing the supporters after the upcoming Forest game.
Speaking about the connection between team and fans, Carrick stressed how important supporters are to the club and said he wants to thank them for their backing over the campaign and for the personal support he has felt during the past four months.
