Brisbane Shooting Injures Teen Bystander Amid Boxing Event Chaos

A 19-year-old woman fights for her life following a shooting outside a Loganholme pub during a boxing event, raising community concerns.

A tragic incident unfolded outside a Queensland pub on Saturday night, leaving a 19-year-old woman critically injured. Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau was shot in the head and neck, and remains in a precarious state at Princess Alexandra Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Details of the Incident

The shooting occurred outside Fitzy's Loganholme, where over 100 boxing fans had gathered for the Logan City Titles event. Among them were families with young children, heightening the shock of the violence. The attack injured four individuals in total, leading to widespread concerns about safety in the community.

Vana-Reese, who had only hours earlier shared a joyful video on social media sharing a moment with her partner, now fights for her life. She was a vibrant part of her community, and her condition has sent ripples of fear and sadness throughout the area.

Response from Officials

Phil Austin, a representative from the Australian National Boxing Federation Queensland, expressed his dismay at the event, categorically dismissing speculation that the shooting was tied to organized crime or biker gangs. He stated that such conjectures were merely focusing on coincidental connections and that the event itself had no links to criminal activity.

“I haven’t seen any reputed organized crime figures at a fight show in this country in years,” Austin stated. He was present at the time of the shooting and described the chaos that ensued as the community reacted. “What we know for certain is that it's a tragedy.”

Investigation Status

The investigation is being led by Taskforce Maxima, a specialized unit of the Queensland Police dealing with outlaw motorcycle gangs and serious crime. Police have stated that while the incident appeared to be premeditated, it is too early to speculate on the involvement of gangs.

The assailants reportedly fired shots from a Mitsubishi parked near the venue's drop-off area as an intermission was taking place. Eyewitnesses described two men wearing masks and gloves inside the vehicle, which was later discovered burned out. CCTV footage shows these suspects being collected by another vehicle after abandoning their charred Mitsubishi.

Community Concerns

Queensland Police Chief Superintendent Mel Adams emphasized the psychological toll this incident could have on the community. “This could have been your family member,” she noted. All four shooting victims are receiving medical care, with the other three—aged 27, 37, and 38—reportedly in serious but stable condition.

As the investigation continues, Adams urged those with information to step forward to assist the police in bringing the responsible parties to justice. The local boxing community, along with friends and family, is rallying around the victims, hoping for Vana-Reese's recovery in what has been described as an unbearable time for everyone involved.

“It really hits home for me because I have a son the same age as her,” Austin shared, echoing the sentiments of a community trying to make sense of an incomprehensible act of violence.
