Renowned Boxers Call for Accountability in BFI Leadership

Prominent figures in boxing demand reforms and greater transparency from the Boxing Federation of India under Ajay Singh.

In a significant gathering, a coalition of Olympians, Arjuna and Dronacharya Awardees, coaches, and seasoned boxers convened to express their displeasure regarding the management of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). This meeting took place on October 24 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, centered on supporting Pramod Kumar, the organization’s Secretary General.

Voices of Experience Unite

The press conference featured addresses from various distinguished attendees, including notable figures like Rajkumar Sangwan, SR Singh, Anup Singh, Jaypal Singh, Manoj Kumar, and Dhayal. Pramod Kumar utilized this platform to articulate his vision for Indian boxing, focusing on comprehensive development and accountability within the federation.

Commitment to Grassroots Development

Pramod Kumar candidly discussed the hurdles faced in his role, underscoring his dedication to nurturing grassroots boxing. “I have been a player, and my priority will always be athletes,” he affirmed. He lamented the lack of interaction from BFI President Ajay Singh regarding critical issues and highlighted the troubling absence of sponsorship for boxing events. Kumar acknowledged, however, the backing received from the Sports Authority of India and the government.

Kumar outlined initiatives he is spearheading, which include the launch of under-12 boxing in Uttar Pradesh and registering young talents. He drew inspiration from Neeraj Chopra’s success to emphasize the importance of identifying and nurturing talent early. “If we neglect grassroots efforts and fail to organize competitions, how can boxing thrive?” he questioned, pointing to the necessity of developing foundational talent to produce champions.

Plans for Future Competitions

Despite facing financial constraints, Kumar has managed to organize competitions, reportedly contributing around ₹21–22 lakh of his own funds to sustain activities in Uttar Pradesh. He attributed the ongoing vibrancy of boxing to the dedication of athletes and institutional support.

The boxing community called for a strategic development plan that includes grassroots initiatives, district and state competitions, national championships, and talent identification. They emphasized the need for national championships to be conducted regularly with careful planning, particularly focusing on sub-junior and junior categories.

Transparent and Fair Selection Processes

The group proposed that the BFI publish an annual competition calendar and ensure a transparent selection process for referees, judges, and technical officials based on merit. They stressed that selection criteria for national camps and international representation should be clear, consistent, and shared publicly. There was also a consensus that coaching positions, including those for foreign trainers, should exclude favoritism and serve the best interests of Indian boxing.

Furthermore, establishing a robust accountability mechanism to address grievances from athletes was deemed essential for maintaining their trust in the system.

Empowering Indian Coaches

A significant focus was placed on recognizing the contributions of Indian coaches who have produced numerous champions. Their expertise should drive the national training programs and efforts in talent cultivation, with foreign coaches enhancing rather than overshadowing their roles. The community advocated for opportunities for Indian coaches to engage in international training initiatives and workshops.

Additionally, they called for continuous professional training for coaches, referees, and officials, covering topics like modern training techniques, athlete welfare, and performance analysis through seminars and clinics.

A Call for Unity and Progress

Prominent figures like Brigadier D.N. Devine Jones and others were recognized for their contributions towards establishing a strong foundation for Indian boxing. The boxing fraternity urged for inclusive consultations with stakeholders to coordinate future policy and development planning.

Kumar highlighted the disunity within the organization, calling upon all involved to come together in the pursuit of boxing's betterment. “We must unify and confront challenges together,” he stated, emphasizing that the BFI leadership has a crucial role in bridging divides and fostering an environment of collaboration.

Upcoming Vote of Confidence

The boxing fraternity has also expressed the need for a fair process regarding the No-Confidence Motion against Ajay Singh during the upcoming Special General House Meeting on October 28, 2026. They emphasized that all members should have the freedom to express their opinions without coercion, in accordance with constitutional norms.

Pramod Kumar expressed hope for a brighter future for Indian boxing, suggesting that with systematic reforms and unified support, the nation could enhance its international medal tally. “With the right changes and collective dedication, we can create better opportunities for our boxers,” he affirmed.

Lastly, they called upon the Indian Prime Minister and the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports to lend their support in addressing these concerns, ensuring governance that is transparent and aligns with constitutional protocols. The boxing community is committed to advancing the sport through an inclusive, well-planned approach prioritizing fairness, accountability, and grassroots development.
