Everything You Need to Know About the 2023 NBA Cup Format

Get all the essential details on the NBA Cup's rules and format changes for this season.

This past Friday marked the exciting kickoff of the NBA Cup's fourth season, launching a series of thrilling matchups. Over the next few weeks, basketball fans can look forward to six more jam-packed nights of competition.

Understanding the Group Stage of the NBA Cup

The group stage consists of seven nights dedicated to group play, where every game played will impact the standings. Each group comprises five teams, and every team goes head-to-head against the others once, totaling four games per group.

The top team from each group will automatically secure a spot in the knockout rounds. Additionally, there will be one wild card spot available for the top non-group winner from each conference, making a total of eight teams participating in the knockout rounds.

In case of a tie, the NBA has a set procedure to determine the standings, which includes:

  1. Head-to-head matchup results
  2. Point differential during group play
  3. Total points scored in group games
  4. Record from the 2025-26 NBA season
  5. Random draw (a rare occurrence)

It's important to note that points scored in overtime games will not be counted toward a team’s point differential for tiebreakers. Therefore, if a game goes into overtime, both teams will essentially treat their point differential for that game as "0".

As for scheduling, a significant change this year is that most of the games are set to occur on Friday nights instead of a mix of Fridays and Tuesdays. Specifically, five matches will be held on Fridays, while one will take place on Tuesday and another on Wednesday.

Navigating the Knockout Rounds

Once the group stage concludes, the tournament transitions into a knockout format, bearing resemblance to March Madness. Eight teams will compete in a single-elimination bracket, with the four best teams from each conference facing off until one team emerges victorious in both the Eastern and Western Conferences.

Here’s the schedule for the knockout rounds:

  • Quarterfinals: December 4 and 5
  • Semifinals: December 7 and 8
  • Finals: December 11

The championship game will take place at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is renowned as the home of the Butler Bulldogs. Each knockout round offers various prizes, with the ultimate winning team seeing individual players potentially earn upwards of half a million dollars.

With all these details in mind, fans can now relax and revel in what is shaping up to be an exhilarating NBA Cup season!
