Understanding College Basketball’s NIL Landscape
The landscape of college basketball is rapidly changing, especially with the influence of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals. CBS Sports recently engaged with over 100 sources to determine how much each power-conference team is projected to spend on their rosters for the upcoming season. Their findings revealed that a significant number of teams are allocating over $20 million to ensure competitive rosters.
Out of the 11 teams predicted to enter the Tier 1 spending category, only North Carolina is lacking a preseason ranking in the AP Top 25 poll. This suggests a discrepancy between financial investment and anticipated success on the court, particularly for the Tar Heels entering a transitional phase under new head coach Michael Malone.
North Carolina: High Spending, Low Ranking
As North Carolina embarks on a new journey with coach Michael Malone, the team's spending figures for the 2026-27 roster are noteworthy. Despite investing heavily in both transfers and new recruits, the Tar Heels did not make the AP Top 25. Instead, they received enough votes to suggest they rank around 30th nationally.
Malone, a former NBA coach, faces challenges typical of a first-time college head coach. Having been appointed shortly before the transfer portal opened, he was thrust into a race against time to build a competitive roster. Only a single player from last season’s squad who regularly contributed returns, with several new faces joining. Among them are standout transfers like Neoklis Avdalas from Virginia Tech and four-star Maximo Adams.
