Shakur Stevenson Explains His Departure from Zuffa Boxing

Shakur Stevenson discusses his recent exit from Dana White's Zuffa Boxing after just three months.

Shakur Stevenson, the accomplished boxing champion, has shared the reasons behind his surprising exit from Dana White's Zuffa Boxing, after a brief stint that lasted only three months.

Stevenson's Journey with Zuffa

Initially, Stevenson, a four-weight class champion, joined Zuffa Boxing in July, excited about the opportunities the promotion could offer. With a flawless professional record of 25 wins, he had high hopes for chasing major fights in the boxing world.

However, shortly after signing, Stevenson realized that the promotion was not aligning with his aspirations for significant bouts. This led to his decision to become a free agent, which he announced via his YouTube channel.

Decision to Go Independent

In his video, Stevenson emphasized that his departure was not due to any personal grievances. He stated, “I’m not mad at anyone, I’m not pointing no fingers, but upon all of these issues and things that’s been going on, I requested to be released from Zuffa Boxing.”

He expressed enthusiasm about taking control of his career: “I am now taking my career into my own hands, and I’m starting my own promotional company.” Stevenson is open to collaborating with other promoters who share his commitment to his boxing career.

The Fallout from Opponent Deals

Boxing analyst Chris Mannix provided insight into Stevenson's reason for leaving Zuffa. The pivotal moment appears to have occurred when fellow boxer Devin Haney opted for an exclusive deal with DAZN, rejecting Zuffa. Mannix noted, “There was a belief that they would get both guys under contract and set up a mega fight at the end of this year. Devin decided to go in a different direction.” This shift not only prevented a highly anticipated showdown but also left Stevenson without major fights.

As Zuffa attempted to secure other prominent opponents for Stevenson, many major promoters were reluctant to engage, perceiving Zuffa as a competitor rather than a partner. Mannix highlighted that Zuffa's approach alienated them from traditional promoters, making it difficult to arrange significant fights for Stevenson.

Limited Options

With the absence of Haney as a potential opponent, Zuffa was constrained in providing Stevenson with the type of matchups he desired. Although there were conversations about fights with notable boxers like Raymond Muratalla and Gary Antuanne Russell, other promoters were firm in not compromising their rising stars to face Stevenson.

This situation culminated in Stevenson turning down a lucrative offer of $7 million to fight fellow Zuffa fighter Jose 'Rayo' Valenzuela. Stevenson ultimately felt that fighting someone like Valenzuela would not advance his career as he sought bigger and more meaningful challenges.

Looking Ahead

Stevenson's decision to leave Zuffa Boxing marks a significant turn in his career as he embarks on building his own brand in boxing. Fans of the sport will be watching closely to see what promotional ventures and matchups he pursues next. In a time filled with changes and challenges, Stevenson’s determination to make his mark on the sport remains unwavering.
