A Game-Changing Format
For the first time in cricket history, boys and girls will form a single team and compete together, contributing to a shared score. This innovative concept, dubbed Test Twenty, is set to launch in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from November 14 to 29, 2026.
More Than Just a Game
The tournament will encompass a total of 160 young players, aged between 13 and 21, divided into four teams representing different continents. Each squad will include 20 boys and 20 girls, bringing a unique competitive dynamic to the game.
Test Twenty aims to merge the essence of traditional Test cricket with the fast-paced action of T20 matches. Here's a closer look at how this exciting new format will function:
How It Works
The competition structure entails that boys will play against boys while girls will compete against girls. However, the key twist is that their runs will contribute to a single team score, making teamwork essential.
For instance, if Team A's girls score 150 runs and Team B's girls make 130, Team A has a 20-run lead from the girls' innings. But if Team B's boys respond with 190 runs while Team A's boys only achieve 160, Team B emerges victorious with a higher total.
This format emphasizes the significance of both genders performing well for the team to secure a win, highlighting the importance of collaboration and synergy.
Match Details
Each match will consist of 80 overs total. The initial 40 overs will be played during daylight hours using a red ball and traditional white kits. Once the sun sets, the game will transition under floodlights for the remaining 40 overs, where players will don colorful jerseys and utilize a white ball.
Additionally, a coin toss will determine whether the boys or girls will bat first, adding another strategic layer to the competition.
Endorsements from Cricket Legends
Adding credibility to this visionary project are cricket veterans from around the world. The advisory board features renowned figures like former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, Australian batsman Matthew Hayden, and West Indies cricket legend Clive Lloyd.
Colin Cowdrey's role couldn’t be overlooked, as he chairs the Global Selection Committee. Cowdrey is notably recognized for mentoring players, including star cricketer Virat Kohli.
A Venue of Distinction
All matches will unfold at the historic Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. The tournament finale is scheduled for November 29, and for cricket enthusiasts, live broadcasts will be available via Sony Sports Network.
Looking Ahead
While the cricketing world awaits the introduction of Test Twenty, only time will tell if this coed format can carve out a niche alongside established variations of the sport. However, the prospect of boys and girls uniting under a single banner, marking runs together, and celebrating shared victories adds an exciting chapter to cricket's evolution.
