Historic Asian Games Journey
NAGOYA, Japan – In a thrilling semi-final match on October 1, Pakistan's men’s cricket team made history by reaching their first-ever final at the Asian Games. With a stunning performance, they triumphed over Bangladesh by six wickets, setting the stage for a potential gold medal clash against arch-rivals India.
Cruising Through the Semi-Final
The match, played at the Korogi Athletic Park Stadium, faced weather challenges, forcing a reduction to 13 overs due to wet conditions. Choosing to bowl first, Pakistan capitalized on the tricky, cracked pitch that had been under covers for nearly a week.
Pakistan’s bowlers immediately put the pressure on, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 21-3 and later 45-4 within the first six overs. Towhid Hridoy stood out for Bangladesh, managing to score 42 runs off 25 balls, which included two fours and four sixes. His efforts helped Bangladesh finish their innings at 111-7.
Decisive Batting Performance
Chasing the target, Pakistan faced early setbacks, losing three quick wickets. However, the partnership between Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz changed the game. At a precarious 53-4 in the seventh over, the duo formed an unbroken alliance of 59 runs, sealing victory with nine balls to spare.
Samad was particularly impressive, ending his innings not out at 30 off just 15 balls, while Nawaz contributed a steady 27 not out. The match turned in Pakistan's favor during the 10th over, where Samad unleashed a remarkable assault, scoring 22 runs off just five balls against Mustafizur Rahman, significantly cutting down the runs needed.
Looking Ahead
With the final set for October 3, the anticipation builds as Pakistan awaits the outcome of the semi-final between India and Sri Lanka. Saim Ayub, one of Pakistan's key players, remarked about the impending final, stating, “We don't worry about who we are playing against. Our only focus is on winning the final.”
Meanwhile, Bangladesh will now have a chance to compete for the bronze medal against the losing team from the other semi-final on the same day.
