Paris St-Germain have asked France’s Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) to postpone their Ligue 1 trip to Lens, a fixture scheduled between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final with Liverpool. The match at Lens is set for Saturday 11 April — three days after PSG host Liverpool in the first leg and three days before the return at Anfield. Liverpool are due to host Fulham in the Premier League on the same weekend.
Lens, who sit second in Ligue 1 one point behind PSG and are chasing their first top-flight title since 1998, have strongly objected to the request. The club issued a statement criticising what it described as a “troubling sentiment” and warned that treating domestic fixtures as flexible to suit clubs’ European schedules risks relegating the league to an “adjustment variable” at the whim of some teams. Lens said the situation raises a fundamental question about respect for the competition.
A PSG spokesperson told BBC Sport that similar rescheduling has been carried out by the LFP previously to support French clubs involved in European competition, and that such changes do not undermine the league. PSG also argued that deep runs in continental tournaments benefit French football as a whole, noting France’s sixth place in the UEFA coefficient rankings for the 2025–26 season.
Lens head coach Pierre Sage, speaking after his side’s 5-1 win over Angers, said his team did not agree with postponing the match. PSG have precedent for this kind of request: their Ligue 1 game against Nantes was postponed before a Champions League tie with Chelsea, a tie PSG won 8-2 on aggregate.
The LFP will make the final decision and has said it will try to assist French clubs competing in Europe. The governing body also confirmed that Strasbourg have asked for their Ligue 1 game at Brest that weekend to be postponed, because it falls between their Conference League fixtures against Mainz.
