In a heartfelt announcement, Punam Raut, the seasoned top-order batter of the Indian women's cricket team, has declared her retirement from all forms of international cricket, effective immediately. The 37-year-old cricketer made this significant decision on October 15 through her social media platforms.
A Fulfilling Cricketing Journey
Raut has had an illustrious career spanning from 2009 to 2021, during which she made considerable contributions to the Indian cricket team. Over the years, she participated in four Test matches, 73 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 35 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Throughout her journey, she accumulated impressive statistics, scoring 264 runs in Tests at an average of 44, 2,299 runs in ODIs at an average of 34.83, and 719 runs in T20Is.
A Passion for the Game
Reflecting on her retirement, Raut expressed profound appreciation for her experience as an international cricketer. She shared her thoughts in an emotional post, stating, "Playing for India has been the greatest honour of my life. Cricket is more than just a game—it's about character building, resilience, and creating unforgettable memories. Each time I donned the India jersey, I felt immense pride and gratitude."
Endearing Memories and Milestones
Among her cherished moments, Raut recalls the 2017 ICC Women's World Cup, which she considers a pivotal point in her career. Despite India finishing as runners-up, she believes the tournament played a crucial role in the evolution of women's cricket in India, inspiring countless young girls to take up the sport. "The World Cup will always be a defining moment for me. Although we fell short of the trophy, the experience transformed women's cricket and opened doors for future generations," she noted.
Gratitude to Supportive Foundations
Raut’s success is also attributed to the encouragement she received from her domestic cricket team. She extended her gratitude to the Mumbai Cricket Association, recognizing their vital role in her early development as a player. "Thank you to the Mumbai cricket community for believing in me during my formative years. They provided the opportunities and mentorship that propelled my career forward," she stated.
In a notable match during the Women’s Quadrangular Series in South Africa in May 2017, Raut and her teammate Deepti Sharma set the record for the highest opening partnership in women’s ODI history, scoring 320 runs against Ireland. Raut contributed significantly to this milestone, scoring 109 runs before having to retire hurt.
Raut's final Test in 2021 was also poignant, as she famously walked off the field after edging a ball, despite the on-field umpire's decision to not dismiss her. This moment reflected not only her integrity but also her deep commitment to the sport.
Looking Ahead
As she closes this chapter of her career, Punam Raut leaves behind a remarkable legacy within Indian women's cricket. Her contributions on the field and her unwavering passion for the game will be remembered and celebrated. Her journey serves as inspiration for aspiring cricketers across the nation, demonstrating the power of dedication and resilience in the pursuit of excellence.
