Rico Verhoeven Targets Deontay Wilder for Next Fight

Kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven is set to challenge heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in an exciting boxing match.

Rico Verhoeven, a prominent name in the world of kickboxing, is ready to take another step into the boxing ring. After an impressive kickboxing career that featured an astonishing 11-year title reign, Verhoeven made his highly anticipated boxing debut against Oleksandr Usyk. Stepping into the ring after a 12-year break, Verhoeven faced one of the sport’s top talents, Usyk, widely regarded as one of the finest fighters of the past two decades.

Throughout the fight, Verhoeven entered as the underdog, with many doubting his chances against the seasoned Usyk. Surprisingly, he showcased remarkable composure and skill even under intense pressure. In fact, Verhoeven claimed victory in the first round according to all three judges. As the bout progressed, he continued to impress, winning at least five rounds before a controversial stoppage halted his momentum with just one second remaining in the 11th round. Two judges had Verhoeven tied, while another had him ahead, making the end all the more contentious.

Looking Ahead to a Fight with Wilder

Despite the setback against Usyk, Verhoeven remains undeterred and is eager to return to the ring. Recently, he disclosed exciting news about his next opponent while appearing on talkSPORT. The Dutch fighter confirmed that he received an offer to face none other than former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Verhoeven stated, "I can’t confirm just yet. What I can tell you is that they offered me the fight. They offered me Deontay Wilder. I said yes. The details need to be talked about still. But for that, I’m waiting on a response. So, if there’s a yes from the other side, it’s going to happen.”

Wilder's Comeback Attempt

Deontay Wilder, known for his fierce knockout power, has had a mixed record in his last few outings, currently holding a 3-4 score in his last seven fights. At 41 years old, questions linger about his longevity in the sport. Nevertheless, Wilder remains a threat due to his ability to end fights with a single powerful punch. While some aspects of his game may be waning, his knockout ability remains intact.

Potential Venue: Cardiff

There is also speculation that this electrifying matchup could take place in Cardiff, especially with the much-anticipated Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua event looming. Promoters are keen on making Cardiff the stage for what could be one of the year’s most notable boxing cards, and a fight featuring Verhoeven against Wilder would fit perfectly.

Although neither fighter may have aspirations for a major world title, the prospect of two heavyweight battlers meeting in the ring is enough to excite any crowd. A win for Verhoeven could pave the way for greater opportunities down the line.
