Russia Returns to Ice Hockey World Cup as Ukraine Exits

The Russian national ice hockey team will take Ukraine's place at the 2027 World Cup, following a decision by the IIHF.

The landscape of international ice hockey is set to change significantly with the recent announcement from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). In a surprising turn of events, the Russian national team will be reinstated for the 2027 World Cup in Germany, taking the spot previously held by Ukraine.

IIHF's Decision on Russia's Reinstatement

Confirmation of this decision came via an interview with Andres Larsson, a member of the IIHF Council and head of the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation. According to Larsson, Ukraine will be eliminated from Group A, and Russia will reclaim its position in the tournament.

Larsson stated, "Yes, we have already made a decision at the congressional level that when Russia returns, which will be now, it will take the level at which it was before." He emphasized the importance of understanding how this will impact the format of the World Cup, as it involves multiple teams, matches, and broadcasting rights.

Sweden’s Position on the Upcoming World Cup

In light of this development, Larsson made it clear that Sweden will not participate in any boycott against the upcoming World Cup. He expressed a firm belief that athletes should engage in international events, stating, "A boycott is not an option. We believe that our athletes should be present at the World Championships or other international events, and in the case of hockey, players."

This stance reflects a broader perspective within the Swedish ice hockey community, despite personal disappointment at the reinstatement of the Russian team.

Historical Context and Reactions

The return of the Russian national team to the elite division marks a notable shift, as they had previously been suspended from international competitions. Ukraine's ascent to the top division had been a historic moment, marking their first entry in 20 years. However, this progress is now overshadowed by the latest developments.

Larsen’s sentiments were echoed by many in the hockey community who had hoped for a different outcome. The decision came after an appeal by the Russian side was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which dismissed five resolutions of the IIHF and mandated Russian teams' readmission to competitions for the 2026/2027 season.

Russia's Minister of Sports, Mikhail Degtyarev, confirmed that they would adhere to this ruling, and the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF) indicated their readiness to comply with the necessary changes prompted by the court’s decision.

Looking Ahead to the World Cup

As anticipation builds for the 2027 World Cup, there are many questions regarding how the tournament structure might adapt to accommodate Russia's return. The IIHF is expected to evaluate the tournament formats and schedules carefully to integrate the national teams effectively.

While this reinstatement allows Russia to compete again at a high level, it brings a mix of excitement and concern within the international ice hockey community as stakeholders navigate the complexities of sport governance and compliance.
