Kyle Steyn has been picked to start on the wing for Scotland in Saturday’s Murrayfield clash with New Zealand, with Duhan van der Merwe omitted from the XV. Van der Merwe earned his 50th cap in last weekend’s 85-0 win over the United States and scored twice, taking his international try tally to 34. Steyn, who has 13 tries in 25 Tests, has been rewarded for a strong run of form this season and since returning from a Six Nations injury lay-off, according to head coach Gregor Townsend.
Townsend said Steyn’s consistent performances in multiple facets of the game have earned him the opportunity. Scotland will again be without prop Zander Fagerson, who had shown signs of recovery in training but whose knee was not deemed fully fit to play. Townsend indicated he still expects Fagerson to have a role in the series, but not this weekend.
D’Arcy Rae keeps the tight-head slot in Fagerson’s continued absence. The match against the USA had been played outside the international window, using a squad made up of Glasgow and Edinburgh players; several established internationals return for the All Blacks test. Finn Russell and Blair Kinghorn are back in the backline alongside Ben White and Rory Hutchinson. Captain Sione Tuipulotu is among the home-based players reinstated, and only Rae, Darcy Graham, Scott Cummings and Jack Dempsey retain their places from the USA match. Gregor Brown is preferred at blindside flanker over former skipper Jamie Ritchie.
Across 32 previous meetings between the nations, New Zealand have won 30 and the other two matches ended in draws. Ardie Savea will captain the All Blacks, who have made three changes from the side that beat Ireland in Chicago: lock Josh Lord and outside centre Leicester Fainga’anuku come in for the injured Scott and Jordie Barrett, and flanker Wallace Sititi replaces Simon Parker.
Townsend warned Scotland will be facing a cohesive side ranked number two in the world and stressed the team must deliver close to their best performance.
Selection analysis: Dropping van der Merwe — Scotland’s joint-record try-scorer — is a bold call but one Townsend believes necessary. Van der Merwe offers unique attacking threat but can be vulnerable defensively and under high kicks. Steyn is viewed as the more rounded option: reliable under the high-ball, strong in defence and still a genuine try threat at Test level.
The main concern for Scotland is at tight-head prop. Fagerson’s absence is a significant setback; Rae has limited Test experience at this level and will have a crucial task policing the scrum, particularly against the power of Ethan de Groot. Rae will need a performance beyond anything he has previously produced if Scotland are to neutralise New Zealand’s front-row strength.
