BFI Leadership Crisis: Allegations of Intimidation Amid Major Funding Deal

Tensions escalate within the Boxing Federation of India as Secretary General Pramod Kumar raises intimidation claims while unveiling a new funding partnership.

Conflict within the Boxing Federation of India

The leadership battle within the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) is heating up as Secretary General Pramod Kumar speaks out against perceived intimidation tactics. His allegations come as the federation announces a substantial ₹40 crore funding deal aimed at enhancing the sport in the country.

Seeking Intervention from Authorities

Kumar has reached out to notable figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and World Boxing (WB) president Gennadiy Golovkin. In his letters, he requests immediate intervention to shield state associations from threats of suspension and pressure concerning the upcoming no-confidence motion against BFI President Ajay Singh.

He claims that several state units and members of the executive committee support the proposed vote of no confidence, demonstrating a significant rift within the organization. The motion is set to be addressed at a special general meeting on October 28.

Allegations of Administrative Misconduct

Kumar argues that under Singh's leadership, there has been a systematic failure of governance. He accuses Singh and BFI executive director Col (retd) Arun Malik of utilizing the federation's administrative power to stifle the no-confidence motion process.

In an alarming twist, Kumar asserts that his access to official email has been curtailed without authorization, leading to concerns about his ability to perform his duties effectively and the security of vital federation records.

Claims of Intimidation and Personal Safety Concerns

Moreover, Kumar expresses apprehensions regarding threats faced by state associations supporting the no-confidence motion. He fears for his personal safety amid these challenges and urges authorities to act swiftly to uphold the integrity of the federation.

Contrarily, Malik has dismissed Kumar's claims as unfounded, asserting that no such intimidation tactics have been employed. He further refutes the notion that Kumar’s email access has been restricted, calling on Kumar to verify his access.

Strengthening Indian Boxing Through New Partnerships

This turmoil unfolds against the backdrop of a significant partnership aimed at advancing boxing in India. The National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), Sports Authority of India (SAI), and Indian Oil Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) committing ₹40 crore over the next two years. This investment will support athlete development, coaching, and infrastructure for boxing academies, among other initiatives.

Sports Minister Mandaviya highlighted the importance of corporate social responsibility in fostering a national sports ecosystem aligned with the revamped Khelo India scheme. The deal was celebrated by senior officials from the sports ministry, and Singh was present alongside Malik during the signing event.

The Path Ahead for BFI

This partnership comes on the heels of Indian boxers achieving notable success at the 2026 Asian Games, securing a total of six medals, including three golds. The remarkable performance underscores the necessity of robust support systems from grassroots to elite levels.

With the October 28 vote looming, the BFI is at a crucial juncture, tasked with navigating both the influx of funding and the deepening internal strife over its governance and leadership structure. As the situation evolves, stakeholders are anticipating a resolution that will prioritize the future of boxing in India.
