MANCHESTER, Sept 19 - England capped off a spectacular series against Sri Lanka with a convincing eight-wicket victory, lifting them to the top of the T20 world rankings. This match, held at Old Trafford, marked the end of their 3-0 series sweep, further solidifying England's dominance in the format.
Buttler’s Remarkable Performance
In this final encounter, England chased down a target of 125 runs with a remarkable 62 balls remaining. Jos Buttler led the charge with an impressive unbeaten half-century, scoring 62 runs off just 32 balls, while Harry Brook added a valuable 33 runs before being run out.
Buttler, who recently became the first player to achieve 15,000 career runs in T20 cricket, reached his half-century with a powerful six, sealing the win for England at a total of 126-2.
Sri Lanka’s Struggles
Sri Lanka’s batting lineup struggled throughout the match, ultimately collapsing to 124 all out with seven deliveries to spare. Despite a promising start, they finished their powerplay at 47-2 but were unable to maintain momentum. Opener Pathum Nissanka provided some resistance with 36 runs, and Kamindu Mendis contributed 35 runs, but overall it was a disappointing performance.
Captain Charith Asalanka voiced his concerns post-match, stating, "A very disappointing series for us in both batting and bowling. This should serve as a wake-up call for us to assess our T20 capabilities compared to the world's best teams."
England's Dominance and Future Matches
This victory continued England's impressive run, marking their 15th consecutive win against Sri Lanka in T20 cricket. They entered the match with confidence, having opted to bowl first again after winning the toss, a strategy that proved successful.
The Sri Lankan bowlers struggled, conceding nine wides and allowing the English batters to find their rhythm. In contrast, England’s bowlers were clinical, with Will Jacks, Jofra Archer, and Sonny Baker each taking two wickets to dismantle the visiting side.
Looking ahead, England is set to shift focus to the One Day International (ODI) format, with a three-match series against Sri Lanka beginning next week. The first ODI will take place at Chester-le-Street, followed by matches at Headingley and The Oval.
“I think everybody stepped up in this series,” said Brook, who was also named Player of the Series. “Every game has been slightly different, and we’re playing the conditions extremely well.”
