Sikandar Raza Sets Firm Retirement Plans Ahead of 2027 World Cup

Zimbabwe's captain Sikandar Raza confirms he will retire after the 2027 ODI World Cup, regardless of future opportunities in Test cricket.

ZIMBABWE’s cricket captain, Sikandar Raza, has made it clear that his tenure with the national team will conclude following the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia. He expressed that the upcoming tournament in his home country will be his final bow in international cricket.

Retirement Decision Is Final

During a recent media conference hosted by the mobile gaming platform SIXR Cricket, Raza spoke candidly about his retirement plans. Despite the potential for Zimbabwe's inclusion in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle from 2027-30, Raza asserted, "No, I will not be tempted. I have come to peace with the decisions that I am making in life." He emphasized the significance of retiring after a World Cup, stating, "Every cricketer dreams of having the opportunity to retire after playing in a cricketing World Cup."

World Test Championship and Zimbabwe's Growth

While Raza is firm on his retirement, he believes that if Zimbabwe becomes part of the WTC, it could serve as a catalyst for improving the nation’s cricketing abilities. He remarked, "If Zimbabwe is part of WTC, we might not be able to do well at the start, but one thing I do know… our cricketing growth will quickly go up." Raza acknowledged that the longest format of the game has been vital for his development, despite playing only 22 Test matches in his career.

Challenges of Hosting the World Cup

As Zimbabwe prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Raza mentioned the difficulties in securing a home advantage. He noted, "For ICC events, it's very difficult because the ICC controls everything. But yeah, we will try to take some fair advantage where we can." The tournament's schedule includes a key match against India on October 24, 2027, which will take place at the new Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls.

Excitement for the New Stadium

Raza is eagerly anticipating the launch of the Victoria Falls stadium, expressing excitement over the fixtures planned for early next year. He added, "We are really looking forward to it," highlighting the stadium’s potential to enhance the local cricketing landscape. The venue boasts not only excellent facilities but also stunning views and a serene environment.

Spotlighting Future Stars

In looking ahead, Raza pointed out the promising talents of batter Brian Bennett and bowler Newman Nyamhuri, stating, "These two players are likely to make significant impacts even after the senior players have moved on." His confidence in the upcoming generation underscores his commitment to nurturing talent within Zimbabwean cricket.

As Raza prepares for his final World Cup, he reflects on the journey of his career and looks forward to the promising future of cricket in Zimbabwe.
