Fiji Rugby to Launch Skipper and Nasoko Teams for Future Growth

Fiji Rugby announces the formation of a new Skipper Select team and the Nasoko women's development side to enhance player readiness and depth.

New Skipper Select Team in the Works

Fiji Rugby is excited to unveil plans for a new Skipper Select team, which will showcase top talents from this year's provincial tournaments. The initiative aims to enhance the country's rugby infrastructure and ensure that promising players gain valuable experience.

Introducing the Nasoko Women’s Team

In a significant step for women's rugby, a new development side known as the Nasoko team will also be formed. This creation follows the conclusion of the ongoing Skipper Cup and Marama Championship finals scheduled for this weekend, indicating a commitment to strengthen the female rugby framework in Fiji.

Player Selection Underway

Acting chief operating officer Talemo Waqa confirmed that the selection process for both teams is currently taking place. The high-performance team is diligently evaluating standout players from the provincial leagues to ensure that the best talents are chosen.

The Nasoko team is particularly significant, as it addresses the challenges faced by women’s rugby, ensuring players are well-prepared before entering the international arena. Waqa emphasized the importance of providing these athletes with the right exposure and preparation, which has been lacking in previous international matches.

Lessons from Past Campaigns

Reflecting on past performances, Waqa mentioned the 2022 matches against the Australian Wallaroos, Samoa, and Tonga, where the Fijian team competed without any warm-up games. This lack of preparation was detrimental, and the creation of the Nasoko team aims to prevent similar experiences in the future.

Building a Competitive Edge

Waqa believes that the new team will allow for crucial game-time experiences for emerging female players. It also provides an opportunity for coaches and the high-performance staff to evaluate skill sets and develop playing combinations ahead of upcoming international commitments.

A Pathway to Representative Rugby

The establishment of both the Skipper Select and Nasoko teams is part of Fiji Rugby's broader vision to create pathways for talented players from provincial levels to national representation. This initiative not only aims to strengthen the depth of rugby talent in Fiji but also focuses on inclusivity and growth in women's sports.

As the sports community awaits the announcements of the selections after this weekend's finals, the anticipation builds for the fresh talent that will soon be showcased in national teams.

In addition, fans should mark their calendars for the opening round of the INKK Farebrother Challenge starting this Saturday, where they can enjoy live coverage on Viti+.
