Ukraine Ice Hockey Federation Disappointed by CAS Ruling on Russia

The decision to allow Russia back into international ice hockey competitions has sparked outrage from Ukraine's federation.

The ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) permitting Russia to return to international ice hockey competitions has generated significant backlash, particularly from Ukraine's ice hockey federation.

Russia's Suspension and the CAS Decision

Russia's ice hockey teams faced a ban from participating in International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) events following the country's invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022. This suspension was reaffirmed earlier this year by the IIHF.

The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF) subsequently challenged this suspension, leading CAS to conduct an in-person hearing in Lausanne, Switzerland. The court's decision has now overturned the IIHF's ban, allowing Russian teams to participate once more in upcoming international events.

Reactions from Ukraine and Other Nations

In response to the ruling, the Hockey Federation of Ukraine issued a statement that conveyed its strong displeasure regarding the CAS’s decision while acknowledging the authority of the court. The statement emphasized that the threats underpinning the original ban remain present, thus rendering the decision to permit Russian participation alarming.

The federation's message highlighted that allowing Russian teams back into international competitions is especially troubling given the ongoing conflict. They expressed that their concerns over safety and security had not been sufficiently addressed in CAS's ruling, which found that the IIHF's arguments were lacking adequate evidence to support the ongoing ban.

Following the CAS ruling, Russian teams are expected to take part in IIHF events, including the men’s and women’s world championships, starting from the 2026-27 season. This news comes at a time when Ukraine's men's national team recently achieved promotion to the top tier of world championships for the first time in 20 years.

Concerns Expressed by Other National Federations

Prominent figures in the international ice hockey community voiced their concerns about the ruling. Frank Lutz, chairman of the German ice hockey federation, made it clear that he opposes the return of Russian teams, citing substantial security and political implications for Germany as hosts of the men's world championships in May.

In addition, representatives from the Czech Republic and Finland expressed their discontent. Jan Cerny, secretary general of Czech Ice Hockey, stated he was “very unpleasantly surprised” by the decision and reiterated that Czech ice hockey will stand by its initial stance against Russia’s involvement during ongoing hostilities. Heikki Hietanen, from the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation, described the CAS ruling as “incomprehensible.”

Ice Hockey UK has also expressed disappointment but stated that it respects CAS’s authority. They plan to analyze the ruling to assess its implications for Great Britain’s national teams.

Next Steps for the IIHF and RIHF

While the IIHF has publicly voiced its disappointment with the CAS ruling, it has affirmed its commitment to safety and integrity in competitions, claiming the ruling does not assuage any of their initial concerns. The federation acknowledged they will adhere to the ruling but highlighted that the situation is complex and troubling.

The RIHF, on the other hand, welcomed the CAS ruling and vowed to collaborate with the IIHF to facilitate the return of Russian teams to competitive play.

The situation continues to evolve, and the international ice hockey community remains concerned about the broader implications of Russia's return to the international stage.
